Pittsburgh’s Dirty Dozen has been an amateur race since 1983, tackling the 13 steepest climbs found across the city. They ride to the bottom of each climb as a group, then in heats race up the climb with points awarded to the top finishers. The most famous climb is Canton Avenue, claimed to be the steepest in the U.S. at 37%, and made even more challenging on its cobbles. Racers of the 2018 edition woke to pouring rain and 40F temperatures, but they raced anyway, showcasing Pittsburgh’s true grit and tenacity. Full photo gallery found on my Flickr site.
